Hello Folks,

Just read this post.  I'm curious how this issue turned out (with the spring and all).  I am in the process of building a 600HP small block (414 cid) for my '70 Challenger convertible.  It has a 23 spline A-833 with 3.55 gears in the 8.75 rear end.  I will be having someone check out the gear ratios in the tranny this week as this was installed by the previous owner nearly 6 years ago.  All I've been told is that they decided on a lower first gear when they built the car.  Anyway, getting back to the clutch.  I found it interesting to read about clutch sizing and A-833 spline differences (I'm hoping my 23 spline will handle the 600HP OK).  But most interesting is the discussion regarding the "over-center" spring.  I will be running a McLeod Street Twin (diaphragm) clutch.  Gene (at McLeod) said I should remove the over-center spring with this application.  When I called McLeod today to confirm these instructions, the gentlemen I spoke with said the same thing, but also said to keep the pedal return spring installed.  I told him it was an "E" body car (1970 Challenger), but I don't believe I know about this spring.  I don't see any reference to it in any af my books including my service manual.  The car was equipped with the old Keisler Hydraulic T/O kit from 6 years ago.  So, I don't know what the previous owner did with all the springs and linkages when that was installed.  I have decided to discard the hydraulic set-up (it's just too finicky) and go back to the stock Z-bar set-up.  I was curious as to whether or not I needed to purchase an over-center spring (now I know I don't have to).  I am in the process of ordering all the necessary parts for the stock set-up (going with Brewer's Performance for this; if any suggestions on someone better, please let me know).  So, is there a 'pedal return spring' and if so, where does it go?  Thanx

The only spring you'll have or need is the one on the fork. the new CF Dual Friction I just put in had a full page orange notice in the box saying to remove your overcenter spring.

Thanx AMXguy.  Anyone have any idea why the guy at McLeod spoke of a "pedal return" spring?  Help with the other planned set-up stats would be greatly appreciated.

The overcenter spring does both , it returns the pedal to the top & keeps any pressure from riding on the throwout brg & helps pull the pedal down when you push on it

Well I took that biga$$ spring out and all I can say is :woo:. The pedal feels 100 times better. I cant wait to drive it to see if that was definitely the problem, but so far Im thinking it was. Thank you very much for the help :worshippy

Thats very interesting. I wonder if that piece of paper is a recent addition to the instructions or if they just forgot to package it with the clutch I bought :pullinghair:
