Difference between SB and BB K-frames?
« on: March 12, 2007 - 10:54:30 AM »
My car was converted from 340 to 440.

I would not be surprised if the K-frame was left as it was.

How do you tell the difference?

Also, is the stouter K-frame pretty much a necessity when running a 440?

Thanks.

340 to  440 is the same K-frame.  When running a 440 the K- frame is not stouter.  HP 440's and 6 pack 440's had a skid plated added to the bottom of the K-frame.  When you change from a small block to a big block the difference is in the motor mounts that bolt between the engine and the K-frame.  There is a set for the big block and a set for the small block.  I believe 1 mount is the same for small block and big block.  I haven't converted in so long I forget which one.

Good to know.

So... is it safe to say that if the 440 hasn't fallen out of the car it probably has the correct mounts? :-)

ie: is it even possible to mount the 440 without the right mounts?

I'm basically going through the car and finishing the conversion that was started. For instance, upgrading the fuel system to 440 specs, etc.

I don't think you can mount a 440 without the correct mounts, but I've never tried.

Hemi K frames are different. But again, this is only because of the mount pads. The K frame itself is identical regardless of engine. The factory just welded different mounting pads to them for six, V8, or Hemi.
