If the tag's correct, it's a Sure Grip 8 3/4 that someone stole the snubber off...lol.

Sorry, not to take over this thread but do the Sure Grips have a tag on the outside somewhere to indicate it's a Sure Grip?

I know that GMs had a tag that said something like "limited slip differential fluid only".

Thanks!

Thanks guys! your knowledge is in valuable.   :2thumbs:

The seller said it was a Sure Grip with 3:23 gears.  :clapping:

I just wanted to make sure he was telling the truth.

I'll be honest, I could only tell it was an 8 3/4 by the shock mount plates. Do you know how to prove it's a 3:23 sure-grip ?

What? you want proof?  :smilielol:  :stirpot:  :poopoke:

You don't take the owners word for it?  me either.  :roflsmiley:

so...I asked on another thread   http://www.stockmopar.com/_images/brochures/1970-dodge-challenger-dealer-brochure/original/1970-dodge-challenger-dealer-brochure-14.jpg and it looks like three speed cars only came with 3:23 gear ratios in either open or Sure Grip.

But, as always I could be wrong.

From 1969 and back, sure grip rears had the tag.

No tag from 1970 and up.

...and after 30 years I don't know that I would trust that any tags that are installed, or even missing for that matter, are accurate.

Definetly worth checking out if it's presence is a key factor in the price negotiation. Looking at the pic, it doesn't seem to have an engine or trans in it either so I wonder of they are keying in on this as a selling point. A replacement 3:23 Sure grip can be found at salvage yards for around $100 and online for up to a grand. Keep that in mind of the seller is wanting a higher price because of the presence of a 3:23 Sure Grip that may be able to be replaced for less than the value it adds to the negotiated price of the vehicle.

I wasnt sure when the tags stopped. You cant tell the ratio, just that it says "Use sure grip fluid only" or something on the tags. i have one at home on the wall...lol. It's painted orange looks like, and all the ones I saw are bare aluminum. Which is why I say "if they are telling the truth..."

Jack er up - mark the tire at the top = SG should make both wheels turn even - count the number of times the pinion goes round. There is your gear ratio. If one wheel spins backward and one forward then you have an open diff.
