Pics of 3" Spring relocation?
« on: March 07, 2007 - 10:59:11 PM »
Hi all,

I searched, but couldn't find any pictures..... Does anyone have any pictures of how to attach the rear shackle after doing the 3" spring relocation?  I know Bill Reilly has this very good page:

http://www.bigblockdart.com/techpages/springs.shtml

However, that's for an A-body.  The E-body already has the rear shackle connected through the frame, so you have to fab up some kind of mount to move it inboard.  The Mopar Performance drawn in crayon instructions are awful and don't explain what to do with the rear shackle very well, so I'm hoping pictures will help.   :clueless:

With the splayed leaf springs on the E-body, it's the back of the leaf spring that interferes with the tires, so the rear shackle really needs to be moved over 3" or more as well.  I would appreciate any and all pictures!!

Thanks,
Travis

Travis,
Are you still planning on the Airbar. I have mine installed but still want to do minitubs. I got a good 1" or so tire room on the inside because the bar is narrower than a spring. I am contemplating the relocation kit when I get back on the car. If I get the bar on the other side of the frame it will be an easy day after that. I don't really want to wait to see if anyone else is doing the relo with the AirBar. How does 18X11 with a 5.5" backspace sound?
*Note: No spring relocation, just regular AirBar set up w/ coilovers.*

I would use a rectangular bar  2x3" for the crossbars & 3x3 for the longitudinal & weld a tube through the 3x3 for the rubber bushings to sit in , I would also plate the rear of the box the the factory frame rail

The design of the E body really doesn't lend itself to the 3 inch kits that work so well on the A-bodies.
Unless you plan on back halfing the car I think the best thing to do is just use the bolt in kit that moves the springs in about 3/4". You can bolt in a sixties B-bod rear and not need to do any welding or cutting

Those stock wheelwells are huge with the spring out of the way but if you want more room, minitubing only give you an inch more or so because any farther in and you are digging into the side of the Longitudinal (frame).

Hey go-fish,

I'm still considering the Air Ride.  Haven't made up my mind yet.  With the Air Ride you could also move the front spring hanger over 1", combined with the 1" bar versus the 2.5" wide leaf spring, should give you a lot of room for tires.   :smokin:

Hmmmm.... I really want that 315 to fit and just moving the rear of the leaf spring over 3/4" might not be enough.  I'll have to go back out and measure.  Thanks for the advice all...

315 mils is 12.5 inches. That's a squeeze. I want it too. What about putting the bar inside the frame? Ahhhh! I would already have all this figured out if I didn't have to make this deployment. I am going to do something to relocate the bar when I get back.

360cuda, sometimes that inch means alot.

Dr. Diff has a bolt in kit that offsets the springs 1", it allows for a lot of tire on the E-Bodies.

Yeah the 315 fits in the wheelwell.  I have a used 315/35/17 that I mocked up in the wheelwell.  This is with the leaf spring completely removed.  I also had a little 3/4" thick wooden block between the tire and the inner wheeltub just to help hold the tire in place (you can't see it in the pictures).  You can see it's basically tucked up to the quarter panel lip.  With a mini-tub and a rolled lip, it should fit just fine.

:iagree: but sometimes you have to sell the car and hacking up the back lowers the value

Nope, mines not for sale, probably never will be. I'm not in this to make a profit. I set everything up so that my priorities are Family, housing, food, car. I'll never have to sell go-fish so I don't worry about it.
That being said, what brand of tire is that Travis? I looked up that size and not many brands carry it.

The tire is a Michelin Pilot SX... which it doesn't appear that they make anymore.   :(

Ouch, high $ Mich's come on vettes. P-zero? Have you found a new alternative? I couldn't get Nitto's site up. I am not allowed to download on these computers and it takes a Flashplayer to run the site.

You're right... there aren't as many choices as there used to be.  Here's some options though:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare1.jsp?width=315%2F&ratio=35&diameter=17&startIndex=0&search=true&pagelen=20&pagenum=1&pagemark=1&x=86&y=9&RunFlat=All

http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/searchTiresBySize.do?sw=false&cs=315&ar=35&rd=17

Nitto's website does show the 315/35/17 in their new NT01 road race tire which is another option as well.   Nitto also has a 305/35/18 in their 555RII road race tire.

There is always the old stand by Mickey Thompson Indy Profile N50x15. I think that equates to a 305 doesn't it?
