Sold Challenger in 1978. want it back
« on: July 02, 2009 - 10:50:22 PM »
Last seen in 1983.
1972 Top Banana Yellow 340 rallye 4 speed.
Strobe stripes, black vinyl, no wing, black interior, magnum 500s, messed up a-arm under battery tray.
Sold in 1978 to a local guy.
He sold it in 1980 to a guy in Hammonton, NJ
That buyer sold it in 1983.
Here's what I know about the sale in 1983.
It was sold to a black guy with a white girlfriend (ABSOLUTELY no offence to anyone)
He lived on Washington Ave. by the Cardiff circle in Pleasantville, NJ
I do not have the VIN#.
I do know the last known plates.
I already checked with DMV and they do not have records that far back.
If any info is known, please help.
I will pay a finders fee if the car is found.
I have some basic old pics.

Hi Jon,

Just a thought, but maybe take this info and copy and paste it into a craigslist ad in the area you are referring to along with a picture of what the car looked like, either your own pic or one off the internet.  A lot of people have no idea what a Challenger is but if they see an ad with a pic it may jog their memory.

You may also want to try finding some muscle car clubs in the area that may know where that car has ended up.  I know I've bumped into people where I used to go to street races 20+ years ago and they still remember some of the cars there.

Just a question though, if you have no VIN or any other numbers on the car, how will you know it's your old car?  A lot may happen over 20 something years...

Hope you find your car!

Jon,
If it was insured, your insurance company may still have a file on it. If so, they can tell you what the VIN was.

We looked EVERYWHERE for the Vin.
This is/was my Dad's car.
The Insurance Agent used went out of business 10 years ago.
He wrote the vin on the inside front cover of his Challenger repair manual.
We have the Manual, but guess what... Cover's missing.
We have the plate #
No record from DMV
We have the plate # of the man who bought the car from us..
No DMV record
We have the plate # of the man who bought the car next:
No DMV record.
We called DMV headquarters in Trenton, and they said without knowing exactly when my dad was in the DMV. (i.e. Time, date, location) they can't tell us anything.
If we get lucky enough to possibly see the car we will know if it's the old car.
There are a couple key features.
The Battery tray rusted out, and the A frame under it was rotted, and repaired.
We should see repair evidence there.
I know all of the features of the car, and hopefully this will narrow it down some.
Also, I would hope that is we had a potential VIN, we could do some kind of reverse look up.
I have old pictures.
How do I Post them?
Jon

Good luck with it. You might need to resize your pics before posting them. Here's a link to do that easily. When you download one on the site, just replace whatever number is in "Width" with about 600 and its usually perfect. To post here, just look at the "Additional Options" tab below when you are submitting a reply and add the resized photo from your file.

If you get the VIN, you start looking here.  Not complete VINs, but you can get an idea.

Also, check out Car Domain, they have lots of '72 Challengers.
