Clutch fan, water pump, and Fan Shroud recommendations
« on: March 12, 2007 - 09:05:17 PM »
OK, after going one summer (last) dealing with all the issues of overheating and worry about hurting the motor, I have come to my senses and am going to change over to the thermo clutch fan.  While I am at it I am going to replace the water pump, and try to find a shroud that will work for my Aluminum Rad that I put in last summer.  Any one who has suggestions on those part I would really appreciate it.  The shroud part is a real stumper for me, as the only ones I can find that would work have the zip tie type system through the rad, which I do not want to do.  Best suggestions on the Fan, clutch and pump would be great as well.  Thanks.  Moparbulldog :working:

Word is OE style is best overall esp. keeping it KOOL.  Shroud will depend on your radiator. post a picture w/dimensions.

MOPAR - Viscous Fan Package
Most late 1960s and early 1970s factory built muscle cars were equipped with viscous fans for cooling purposes. Engineers have determined through dyno-testing that this viscous fan is the best replacement package. It provides thermostatically controled cooling, includes a lightweight balanced fan and takes the least amount of horsepower from the engine. Offers up to 15 horsepower gain on typical high performance V8s.

Yea, I have seen both of those, and considering both.  The Rad is a Summit direct fit Challenger Aluminum, I believe 29inches.  I can post more when it gets back from having the new instument panel installed  :bananasmi

You know, with those mounting brackets that just might work.  I did not think about that.  I will have to look into it.  I may have to get creative mounting the shroud.

I had MAJOR overheating issues with my Cuda drag car. Went through many pistond due to detonation before I got the cooling system dialed in. The upshot of it was this: scrap the electric water pump and dual electric fans, install Edelbrock hi-volume mechanical pump and six blade steel flex fan. I also installed a supplemental water pump in the lower radiator hose (I forgot the manufacturer's name). Now the car never gets above 175 on the hottest days at the strip and the motor is actually starting to cool down when I make my way down the return road!

As for a shroud, I found a guy on ebay that makes custom shrouds with nice mounting tabs to mount to the radiator itself. Here is the item number of a shroud he currently has listed on ebay: 8058813492. Search for this by item number. He makes great radiators and radiator parts.

Good luck!

Hey ebodies, thanks for the tip.  Those things looks awesome, and would solve an issue with making the other one fit.  I will definitely be getting one of those soon.  It will match perfect.

What do you guys think about putting a small backup fan on the front?  and if so, pusher or puller?  I am thinking puller so it will not push against the thermo?  Thanks.
