Are 440 and 383 A/C brackets the same?
« on: March 23, 2007 - 11:54:30 PM »
Can you use the same A/C compressor brackets for a '70 440 and 383? I've heard 440's are different.

No the brackets are different for the block height.

I need the compressor brackets for a 440, if the 383 ones are different.

The brackets are all the same.  The only one different is the extension plate that bolts to the head that the alternator bolt attaches to. It raises the mount point when using a 383 or 400 engine.

The brackets that mount to the front of the block are the same, I agree

HOWEVER:

It was my recent direct experience...  :banghead:      :)
One of the support arms is not the same, and neither is the " L " bracket that mounts to the head (IIRC on mounting spot)

I customized my 383 ones to work though on my 440.  L bracket just needed redrilling and trimming with a grinder, and the support arm I had to cut and weld back together.

anyway...   that was my experience when I pulled the 383 out and swapped in the 440.
