If the voltage is 12.6v or lower while running, the alternator is not charging and you are running off of the battery.

Make sure you use a good DVM when checking voltages. I once used a 25.00 dollar meter to check my boat batteries. Said I was charging them at 18 volts. I almost .... Checked with a good meter showed normal voltage. Remember you cranking voltage will vary some depending on motor compression, starter and even you wiring. On average I'm guessing it takes 250-400 amps  :wow:to start these v8's an even more in some cases. A high compression motor without a high torque starter starter pulls some serious juice. Thats when its warm. The numbers are worse the colder it gets.
