Need pic of 340 timing cover markings
« on: May 06, 2007 - 06:11:41 AM »
Does anyone have a close-up pic of the timing mark area for a small-block?  I can't tell if what i'm seeing is correct.  The pic shows what I think is there.  I'd like to verify so I can get my timing adjusted.

Thx

What kind of timing light do you have?  If you pick up a dial back type you can adjust it easily.

BTW ?I believe from what we can see it is 5?(On the top)

I have a old Craftsman timing light.  I'm hoping someone has a clear pic of the area.  I believe the top mark is 5, but I'm not sure.

What doesn't make sense to me is why it has 10 AFTER and only 5 BTDC markings?  I keep reading we should be setting these motors to 10-15 BTDC?  If thats the case, it would not be possible to do back when these cars were new from the factory?

I'm no help here, but on my 440, the last line you see is 10* BTDC. And yes, my timing is set a little beyond that.

I think if you look up in there it will go to 10BTDC.  I bought a craftsman dial back for 50 bucks.  If you have some timing tape you could use that as well.

Tom

If you're going to try and performance tune you should get a dial back light to check the advance at 3-3500 rpm.  Or less(rpm) depending on your engine.

Thanks for all the replies, and the pic Bullitt!  The 10 BTDC marking is further up, as mentioned.  There was so much paint and grime I couldn't see it.  Once I poked it with a srewdriver all the paint flaked off.

It will be interesting to see if I can can notice a difference.  It was set to 0 exactly, I think I'll try 10 before as a starting point.
