383 intake manifold question
« on: April 03, 2007 - 03:28:12 PM »
Could someone please tell me if you have to drain the antifreeze when removing and replacing the intake manifold on a 1970, 383 motor?
Also do you put the gasket between the block and the valley pan or the valley pan and the intake manifold?

You don't need to drain the anti-freeze. As for your gasket question, I have only used Fel-Pro gaskets where there was just a valley pan that also extended out to the heads. In other words, the intake would compress the metal of the valley pan when it was tightened down.

I don't think I've ever seen a big block or RB block that came with anything other than a valley-pan- gasket . What are the " other " gaskets made from and what do they look like ? ? ?  :clueless:

Felpro does make a composite gasket also that can be added on top of the valley pan.  It's useful if the intake has been milled and you need spacers.

Mr gasket also makes them and another benefit is they block off the crossover. Some people like them, I usually just use the valley pan and some rtv.

Generally I f I use the gaskets at all I install them under the valley pan on the head to keep any possible oil seepage into the combustion chambers from happening , oil causes detonation which is very bad
