Roller Cam & Pump Gears
« on: February 28, 2007 - 04:15:44 AM »
Have read here and there that if you run roller cam followers then it is best to run bronze pump gears. I have also read that they don't have a long service life?

If this is so what sort of gears does the later roller lifter blocks run? I would think that a factory motor would have a reasonable service life especially from the oil pump as this is the heart of the motor!

Any advise would be appreciated as we don't have these motors here in Aussie in any quantity.

the solid roller cams are billet steel requiring the bronze drive gears , the cams are billet to handle the high ramp speeds & high spring loads used with solid roller cams , typical hyd rollers do not use fast ramp speeds or extreme spring loads so the cams are cast

What CP said. The service life depends on the thrust button clearance, the oil type and means of oil control, and pure luck. I know some that have lasted for 30K miles, and I know racers that can notice wear as timing fluctuations within a season.

My engine builder has made over 500 1/4ml passes on his bronze gear and no problems yet !!! but that equates to 125 miles+ ???

:clueless:I'll refraise the question, the later motors that have roller cams from the factory, do they have bronze oil pump gears? Is it necessary to fit these in a street performance motor that won't see any track work? :dunno:
I'm just exploring options, thanks in advance.

the factory rollers use a cast cam & therefore do not need the bronze drive gear , you do not need a bronze gear for a cast roller cam , any billet roller cam needs the bronze gear

I keep a spare al bronze gear in the glove compartment.  With about .010 cam button spacing I get about 2500 miles on a gear.  I do run a crank trigger ignition so my timing isnt affected very much though... Crane offers a new hyd roller with a cast gear, but its not the right grind for me... Another Q about the roller cams... Im stepping up the lift and Im not sure if Ill get some oil control problems with the hydraulic roller lifters at +.55lift... (unshrouded tapped bore oil holes?) Any thoughts?

Soory I do not have any data on .550 lift rollers uncovering the oiling passages

I do now!
Put the Crane 230 cam in 2 weeks ago, measured everything and found that the top of the oiling land on the lifters was still buried in the tappet bore by about .045" at maximum lift!  The results were great!  no loss of oil pressure (at least up to 6K rpm) and a great power increase!  I like it...

I think it was a better show this year... The only thing that bugs me is when the show field all leaves Sunday morning (after the judging)... As a vendor in the Mfg Midway it makes things pretty depressing/lonely...And they all missed the Vegas Heat flopper running Nitromethane and lifting twice to avoid the wall (and running 7.x...) Made my knees weak watching it...good stuff!  Keep your eyes open for fast Interceptors in AU...theres more than a few runnign around down under!
