rear bumper brackets
« on: April 18, 2007 - 08:42:15 PM »
I'm trying to slide my rear bumper in,removing the filler strip. my question is: is there a diff. between 72 brackets and 70's?  i'm trying 72's and they seem to hold it out too far still.   :1zhelp:

This might help a little:
I have a '70 chrome bumper with brackets off of the car and when I measure from the top of the bracket (on the face against the car) to the deepest hollow of the inside of the bumper, I get about 4 3/4".  If your '72 brackets measure more than that, then that's why the bumper is sticking out too far.  Good luck

'72s are the same as '70.  Any chance you have 73 or 4 in there?

My rear bumper is the stock '74 one with '72 brackets... Here's a pic

One more thing to keep in mind is the large spaces above and below the bumper are almost impossible to comepletely eliminate. You would have to make your own valance with a modified top and change the quarter panels in the bumper corner area to improve that look.
If you ever look at big money modified cars like Joe Rogans SicFish or even that  G-force 'CUDA you can tell the bodymen really went to town on the sheetmetal around the rear bumper to tighten them up.
