American Interiors...lacking?
« on: April 18, 2007 - 10:48:41 PM »
I just pulled 2 pictures off the internet and looked at them side by side.  One is the interior of a Volvo S60R (Volvo's high performance 300hp Machine)  Sells for 38-48k.  Second one is an interior from an SRT8 Charger, sells in the same price range.  Why can't dodge have interiors like that for its flag ship car? :dunno:

The SRT-8 is a 425hp engine, so there is more money in the drivetrain/suspension than the interior.

Personally, I don't see much difference, both are a lot of molded plastic.

Except for the door panel inserts the Volvo looks like plastic also.

I think they look more alike than differant. They almost look like the same designer did them both.

I don't know if its with clean lines or what, but the volvo looks very uncomplicated, where as everything looks very busy in the SRT8.  I think theres a lot of leather people are taking for plastic.

Still looks like plastic to me.  Both look cramped and "busy".  It'd hard to swap a bench seat into either one.

The Volvo is much more stylish... but the American interior quality has been poor for years now.

Volvo is more streamlined, and with the color combination, looks luxurious and expensive. It wraps around and envelops the driver. The Dodge interior, by comparison, looks cheap and spartan. The car could be better, but the American public buys based on perception. And, hey, if you're going to be sitting in it for the next couple of years, it better be nice.

The only thing bad about the Volvo is that the engineers went button crazy with the console...

Your picture dosen't show the SRT8 seats, which are very nice. But the molded plastic does feel like a Rubbermaid trash can. I heard the 08's will be much better.
But if you look at other new American cars the interiors are just as nice as the Volves.

Look at Audi, Mercedes, BMW or Saab if you want to see nice interiors.  The problem is that American mfgs' take a $25K car and option it up to $40K+ with engines and other packages while the European mfgs' start at higher prices which allows for nicer interiors.

I have to say vs European the American stuff is "lacking" to put it nicely. Mum & Dad love their 07 SRT8 300C but it's lacking any real interior "jazz" it's like a 3 year old designed it and compared to the in your face exterior and 320kw Hemi it's very boring and quite frankly cheap. Can't beat the Europeans at much these days, saftey, speed and style. Luckily we still have the Muscle cars (Mopars) to enjoy, when the Yanks were #1.

GM is addressing the poor American interiors in their 2008 models.

Look for the Caddy CTS and Pontiac G8 interiors.

ALready, the Saturn Aura interior is better than what Chrysler or FOrd has.

CHrysler is the worst.  The cheapest, hardest plastic you can find.   We have an '06 SRT8 300c and we needed to order a wood kit b/c it was so drab and dreary in there.

I'm talking mainly of the dash and door panels.

I like to see stitching on the dash and door panels, the latter like the Volvo above.

I think GM is doing a great job of redesigning their vehicles in the last year.
