just added Royal Purple
« on: April 24, 2007 - 06:39:09 PM »
Ok, I pulled the chally out this last weekend and changed the oil, went with Royal purple 10W 40, it is about $7.00 a quart and may not make any difference, but I only change the oil once a year as the chally doesn't rack up to many miles, so hey it averages out in price to multiple oil changes.
Anyone else use the purple?

I use it in my current track car '93 Mustang. I've got in in the engine and rear axle so far so good.

I just started using it, this past Dec was the first time. I talked to the tech guys at Royal Purple after hearing the news of zinc being removed from other oils and was told that they (Royal Purple) would be keeping it SL rated until a viable alternative is found. I'm like you and only change the oil once a year so the little extra cost is not an issue to me.  :2cents:

Royal Purple good stuff...worth the money. After I run out of my supply of the old Rotella T I'll be switching over to the Royal Purple too.

Amsoil still has the zinc at about the same price. Let's hope they keep us guys in mind and not upgrade.  :pullinghair:

A freind of mine is an old chrysler mechanic and he suggested using diesel oils. They are quite reasonable and have the zinc and phosporous additives that our old engines need.

What's the deal with Zinc? And why have oil producers stopped using it?

It is a very slick substance which helps with the longevity of metal to metal contact (for example: flat-tappet cams)

They say it is causing problems with the catalytic converters, so they are removing it.

Always have used it in the 'cuda. Not just cuz it matches the car color.
I've got an 89 Saleen Mustang that has over 500k miles on it.
1st motor went 200k and needed oil rings, smokin on and off the gas.
2nd motor went about the same, same smokin.
I've been runnin Royal Purple in hopes of gettin more than 200k in the 3rd motor. They assure me that will be no problem, I have 130k miles on that one right now and no signs of wear and still have great compression too.
Of course I'm on my second trans and 3rd rear end too.
I did the complete drive train at about the 400k mark and that's where it stands.

Diesel oils will be phasing it out too. The new 07 emissions in NY are now required on diesels and that means the zinc phosphate adative that is good for engine wear reduction is no longer viable in pollution controled vehicles with a catalytic converter.

See this article, its absolutely fantastic and informative:
http://www.hughesengines.com/general/techArticleDetail.asp?articleID=1000039

You can purchase their addative and run whatever oil you want.
