Oil type for 440 Six-Pack

I need to change the oil in my challey 440-Six-Pack. I have heard good things about synthetic oil, but as often as I would like to change it, is it worth the extra cost? I feel better changing it often as opposed to leaving it in for as long as they say you can with synthetic. It would take me forever to put the miles on the engine they say you can with synthetic oil.

I'm going to put some 15w-40 Castrol Heavy-Duty Diesel oil in my 318. I have heard that even though Zinc stuff was cut down in diesel oils that it still has more than most car oils.

  You worry too much.  I change mine once a year. Go with something that has the C1-4 rating on the bottle. I have Amsoil 10W-40, but in the non-synthetic form, the Shell Rotella-T oil has it in 15W-40 weight. It is cheaper too. I know Royal Purple still has it too in synthetic form.

Dave, Mike & everyone .... All the Shell Rotella-T 15-40 that is in the stores now are the new formulation, they took out the zinc. It is no longer CI-4 PLUS. If you can find some of the old stock you will be OK. Besides looking on the bottles for the CI-4 Plus look to see if the bottle has just the blue/white label, that's good old stock. The new bottles have a gold/yellow/blue stripe , that's no good. If you can't find any try using Mobil Delvco 15-40 for diesels that oil is non-synthetic and will work just fine...

I am using Redline 10W-30 and only plan to change it once a year or every 3000 miles, which ever comes first.  A good synthetic oil and good quality filter should not have any problems lasting for a year.   

Royal Purple is another good synthetic oil.

The only thing with using synthetic oil, make sure you have 3000+ miles on the engine with dino oil first, other wise the rings may not fully seat.

15-40 diesel is/was better , now you can use virtually any oil & just add either Mopar engine cob
nditioner or Gm EOS to add the ingredients dropped from most oils recently
 Don`t use synthetic unless you have 3500 miles minimum on your engine ....after that I would recommend synthetic

What about switching to sythetic on an old engine, 82,948 miles?

Should be no problem , I would use a wide grade oil like a 10-40 or 5-50

I wouldn't think twice about using synthetic and leaving it in a car for a year if the miles were low.

I just sold a car that I had run Mobil 1 in. Last oil change was at least a year ago. Only about 500 or so miles put on it. Checked the oil just before I sold it and it was still nice and golden-clear. Looked like it had just gone in.

It really doesn't break down over time like conventional oil.

Just my experianece, at least.

One thing I have heard is that synthentic oil may cause leaks to show up because it does a better job at cleaning. ie: removing deposits that may be keeping a leak from showing up.

But if your engine is in order that shouldn't be an issue.

Just remember if your engine is leaking now, the synthentic oil might make it worse.

I guess I wont add it to anything except brakes and power steering if I do. I leak every other fluid. I just bought some Heavy Duty Castrol Diesel oil anyways.

     A great engine builder told me unless you're running in cold  weather to use 30w and a half bottle of GM EOS. he didn't advise any of the diesel oils as they can foam at high rpm. for what it's worth.
