States and Titles

In CT, the DMV will keep the title of your car if it is at least '81 or older, which can make sale of your car outside of CT difficult. 2 questions:
What other states do not have titles on classic cars?
Why?
Thanks.

New York does not use titles up to 1972. After that you need it.

New Jersey hates everybody so you can't use a title service, but you don't need a title for 72 and older.

in wisconsin everything has a title. I have origional titles for both of my 53 dodge pickups. however on those old trucks and cars the title had the engine serial number so once the engine is swaped there are no numbers to match it to. the state creates its own vin plate for those, or any highly modified or homemade vehicle

Same with Maryland. You need a notarized bill of sale too, so they know how much to tax you.

Florida uses titles for all year of cars and trucks. We no longer have to have titles notorized.

Good thread. We need a clear title to legally register the car in New Zealand. That and a Bill of Sale.
So I wonder how people down here get around that when buying, say, a 67 Barracuda from New York.
Must be something they use or what-not.

Many US states use a registration certificate, such as the one that comes with the license tag, instead of a title for older automobiles. Who knows why. It's just one of our weird American ways. LOL.
