Found an engine!!
« on: May 01, 2007 - 10:07:03 PM »
Project is saved!  Got a 73' 440 from a motor home, stripped it down and its never been taken apart or redone and has clean cylinders.  Anyone know if HP valves in my 71 heads will clear low comp pistons in the 73' block?

Considering that lower compression pistons would sit lower in the cylinder, you shouldnt have any problems. And to my knowledge you can put any piston or head that was factory produced Com ratios on any 440 and you shouldnt have any clearance problems

I got what I thought was a 440 out of a 73 motor home. Turned out to be a 413. They were installed in motor homes with the famous "motor home heads" up to 1973. Plus side all 413 have forged steel cranks.

Considering you have .040 gaskets, there is another .080 with of open chamber combined with the .5 worth of travel from the valve seat, I'd say you will need to have a pretty good sized cam before you have any interference problems.
