the long road back.....
« on: May 24, 2007 - 02:56:21 PM »
I guess it all started in the early 80's (1982 to be exact), with my first car. My oldest brother had a 68 Camaro nice paint but a 6 cylinder 3 speed stick car. The next oldest had a 6 cylinder Falcon. I had been saving for a while and finally it was my turn. I looked all over town but could not find a car in my price rage that I liked. Then one night one of my dads friends were over the house and I over heard him talking about his old Plymouth had to go. So being a young nosey kid I butted in and asked him what the car was. I was floored when he told me it was a 70 Cuda. I then asked what he wanted for it and the answer was $1,200. There had to be a catch for that price, so the next question was what is wrong with it. He said it overheats and the one power window does not work. So for the next week I begged my dad to make this work. Finally he caved and we picked up the car. It turns out the car only needed head gaskets and I had a local shop rebuild the driver’s window motor. After a few years I got stupid and sold the car. I eventually lost track of it and tried a few times to find it.
I have owned over 40 cars and trucks since then and I finally was shocked back to the 80's last year. I received a phone call from a guy in Delaware researching the history of his new car. Once I was sure it was my old car I started to work on trying to get it back. After a few conversations he finally opened the door up a little. He told me about how he regretted selling his first Cuda and told me if he ever finds his car he would sell me mine. A small sliver of hope yes but the door was open. Around February of this year I got a call from the past owner stating that I guy from Florida has his car and he was researching the history of it. It took him about a month but we all came to a fair deal and I finally got my car he got his. The guy in Florida, well let's just say he got a lot of money.
My car is an original California car that is still rust free. It has had one repaint and a few item replaced but they are all NOS replacements from 18 years ago. It is a dual option tag car with some very nice options. Everything on the car is functional and tight. I finally got to take it to a car show and it took first place at the Englishtown, NJ show. This car is garage kept but it is a driver. I have logged 1,500 miles on it so far and plan on driving it to a lot of other shows. I am currently working on the wife to see if I can miss the first few days of vacation so I can make it to Carlisle.
Hope to see all of you there.... Dave

PS this is a very nice site and I like what I have seen so far.

Dave,

I went through a bunch of cars as a kid. My first was a 1966 Chevy II SS 327 4 speed that my Dad picked up for me from a buddy's wrecking yard. I stripped it down and started painting everything. The car was more of a practice session than anything else and on Jr. High graduation, Dad presented me with a running, driving 1970 El Camino SS 396. I drove that to school (even though I was unlicensed) for the first year of high school.

One day, my Uncle came to visit us from New Mexico. He was driving a 1969 Plymouth Road Runner, silver and black, 383, non A/C with a 4 speed. He took me for a ride and it was no comparison to my 396 Chevrolet. The 383 was a real rattler and from that day on, I had to have a MoPar. My Uncle lived with us for a few months and eventually moved back to New Mexico, leaving the Road Runner with us for a while. Months went by and he finally gave the car to me. Even though it was pretty clapped out, I really loved that car.

The Dodge Charger bug bit me really hard my Sophomore year and I traded the Road Runner for a 1969 Dodge Charger SE in F8 Green, 6-way manual seat and vinyl top delete. I stripped the car down to nothing and completely restored it. Through working everyday after school and Dad's efforts during the daytime, I completed the restoration in just over a year. I turned it into a 'correct' RT/SE, right down to the 6 & 7 leaf rear springs, 780/781 torsion bars and rear fender emblems. I built a nice 440 in our engine shop and completed the conversion in 1982. The original black and yellow California plates read XML 371.

I traded the car for a 1967 Hemi Coronet R/T in 1988 with a bad thrust bearing.

I hunted down my high school MoPar recently. It's not far from here, sitting in a barn in Strathmore, California. It has some major front end damage from an accident and it hasn't been registered since 1992. It was sad to see it in that kind of shape, but although it was a nostalgic experience, I just didn't love the 'B' Bodies enough to buy it and bring it back. The people who own it are waiting for it to become more valuable, in hopes of making a lot of money in the future.

Besides....it is the 1970 Challenger that I have always wanted. I think that every other MoPar I owned was just a subsititute for that one car.

I am pleased that you were reunited with your Cuda. Glad to have you here...Robert

Thanks for the comments.......

As for Carlisle it looks like I might have to settle for just Friday this year. I have to leave the show around 5 or 6 and then run back home to load up for my vacation to Myrtle Beach SC. It is a fair compromise with my wife since she did not try to stop me from spending a good chunk of change on this car. I am thinking of heading to the hotel that you guys are staying at and leaving the truck and trailer there so I can meet you guys early before I leave to go there. I am going to send in my registration next week.

I am wondering how I might be able to try and get this car in a magazine. It was in one 18 years ago and I have the magazine. But I would like to have them write a story about the cars history. It might help inspire others to find their car or give up hope. Plus it is cool to see your car in a mgazine.

I had a lot of fun toys after this car. The problem is that they were usually not mopars. I also built a 70 vega GT wagon with a small block and a Dana rear before they made kits for it. But my favorite car was my 68 Camaro. It was butt A$$ ugly to start and it had a six cylinder motor. I took a wild 302 small block and a Doug Nash 5 speed strip box. I fed the power to an Old's rear instead of a Ford. I had a problem with them and did not Ford performance cars in my youth. The end result was torture chamber for drive shafts, U joints, axles and rear center sections. I had all the body work done by a friend who owned a body shop and painted it Canary Yellow with black Z stripes. The car started to cost to much in tickets and broken parts so I finally sold it to get a little extra down money for a house.

talk to all of you guys and ladies later......

Potts,

I used the 302 Chevrolet often in the V8 Vegas. I used the T-50 Reverse-Pattern 5 Speed in several cars with great success.

Did you see the photos I posted of the V8 Vega in the Introductions Forum??? Like you, I had a lot of cool/fun cars, but never had the one I really wanted; a 1970 Challenger R/T. I had some B bodies, but I never loved them like an E body.

Have to wait until Monday now to seal the deal on the Challenger...Robert
