Are automatic and 4-speed Cuda consoles interchangeable?

My 73 Cuda project is a 4-speed, and the console in in bad shape. Someone fairly close is advertising one from an automatic that is in excellant shape. Are they the same, or are there differences? I believe they look the same, but I don't know about internal brackets, etc. Also, can I just use my woodgrain insert since it is for a 4-speed?

The console's are different between the 4-spd's and the auto's. There is a difference on the side next to the shifter boot. (see pics). The top plates will interchange as they are different around the shifter.

I cut my bottom plate and bought a new top plate and it works good. I know some other members cut theres also. I never heard of them having problems. If the auto console is cheap snap it up and all you will need is your top plate and probably new wood grain insert.

My advice would be to modify your auto console if you think, you can. The 4-speed consoles go for big $$$.

Instead of buying a new top plate (over a hundred bucks) couldn't you just cut the auto top plate to fit and just buy the wood grain sticker/decal?

If you look at the screws on the side of the consoles in the above pics, the 4-speed cut-out is more forwardly placed, so I don't think that would work.

How about buy some aluminum stock, use the decal as a template and cut it or have it cut. That has to be cheaper than the $150 plus dollars the inserts are going for now.

On the top plate there is a slight lip that would have to milled in. So it would be hard exspecialy if your making just one. IF you were making a bunch then it would be worth the setup time.
