Will a 440 out of a 73 motor home work in a car?
« on: May 10, 2007 - 04:32:01 PM »
I know a guy who is selling a 1973 440 and 727 out of a motor home. Does anyone know if the mounts or anything else would be different?

Motor Home Heads.  :scared:
Short shaft 727 truck trans.  :banghead:

You can't use them in a car.
Also make sure it is a 440. Motor homes 73 and down could be a 413. They look the same.

Thanks. Too bad. It's complete, has low mileage, was running when he pulled it last year, and he only wants $200 for the whole setup.

Blocks are the same. Thats about it. All the 413's had forged cranks. I got one for $150. The guy said it was a 440.  >:(

The crank is all I will be using.

I would not discount the 440 as a bad engine.  Take a look at the front right, top of the block and see what the numbers read on the pad where the block meets the heads.    A cool thing about a 440 in a motor home, (provided it was not an after market upgrade):  The majority of the 440s in motor homes were 4 barrell...ready?...6 pack engines.  Good heads, 6 pack rods, etc.  They were also installed in some of the Chrysler wagons.  Look for "HP" on the block in the indicated location.  If the HP is there, you have a 6 pack engine with a 4 bbl.  Either way, the cost for the engine and tranny are very appealing.

The 727 did have a short shaft, but it was not necessarily used in motor homes.  Even if it was a short shaft, a quick trip to the local junk yard or a tranny rebuild shop will allow an affordable purchase of an output shaft and long housing.  Ask the question on the length.

As a note:  In 1973 The engine line up was 440, 400, 360, 340, 318, 225.  The 413 max wedge was a 1950's engine which was used until about 1962 when it was increased to 426 cubes.  The max wedge engine was replaced by the 426 hemi in 1964.

413 truck engines were used long after 64
there were different classes of motorhome too , C class tend to have normal engines , A class are a lot different with different heads & water pump etc

You are correct on that.  The 413 and 361 were used in trucks through the late 70's, my guess is about 77.  However the trucks were medium/heavy duty sales and did not appear in general population vehicles - light duty trucks (show room at the local mopar dealer).  With that said, RVs may also have seen the 413.  More to come.

Here are a couple of links to reference:

http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/chrysler/45/bigblock.htm Casting numbers.
http://www.sweptline.com/hist/bigtrucks.html Shows the use of the engine in medium/heavy duty trucks.

Interesting to see some of the 413s were 8 bolt truck cranks.
