1971 440 color
« on: May 07, 2007 - 03:03:24 PM »
Was there such a thing as a 440-4 Challenger in 71 or were they like the 'cuda and only offered the 440-6? If you could get a 4 barrel 440 in a Challenger in 1970 would it be orange or turquoise? I know my car is not going to be correct but I want it to look right anyway. I am not going to clone an R/T, I am putting it back as original except for a magnum hood and dual cutout valance. Thanks!

Hemi orange is the correct colour. No 440-4bbls were offered in E-Bodies in 1971+
In fact, the 1971 440-6bbl engine was only 5hp more than a 1970 440-4bbl, rated at 380hp.

Nope, unfortunately the U Code 440 engines were only available in 1970 only. :-[

All the high performance engines including the 383 and 440 Magnums were orange and everything else was blue is what I'm told.  if you're going with the R/T hood anyway I'd put whatver you want in it and paint it orange,  if it's not going to be all original add the factory options you want, that's me anyway.

It's going to be a 383 CUDA clone...but not until the AAR is done!! one project at a time!! I wanted to do a HEMI clone, but it's such an original car, all numbers matching, I'll be happy with the 383..I'm too stuck on originality...which is a good thing..! A different crank, and a 4bbl, and I will be satisfied! It's also an original Tor Red car (orange) which is cool..should look killer with some billboards down the road..

I dont think you will need a different crank, cam maybe? cam, springs, 4 barrel, intake, windage tray, that and compression was the difference between 2 barrel 383 and 4 barrel. As far as I know the crank was forged on both. I dont think a 383 ever came with a cast crank did it? Sounds like a cool project, I really want to get another 'Cuda, all I ever see anymore when I see ANYTHING are Challengers.
