727 Q: Do I need a billet drum??
« on: May 09, 2007 - 07:02:41 AM »
Guys,
The car I am asking about is destined to be mainly a street driven car. 80/20 street/strip.
It is a '74 Challenger with a fairly stoutly built 440 with E-Heads, comp cams hydraulic roller cam and should put out around 575hp/ftlbs.
It has an 8 3/4 (for now) with a 4.10 sg and 28" M/T ET street tires.
I'd like to see it run 11.99's.
It has no heat, no a/c, manual brakes, manual steering and is lightened some from stock.

I spoke to John at CRT and I am pretty certain that's where I'll get my tranny. He tried to help me but I think I was aggravating him with my stupid questions and indecisiveness. He advised me to go with a Reverse manual valve body for longevity and the fun factor, all his trannies are low-band apply, but he also strongly advised me to go with a billet drum.
I know that is sound advice but what I ended up spending on the motor has left me shorter $ wise than I expected no matter how much I don't want to chintz on the tranny.

I am not sure what power level the pro street reverse manual VB tranny is good to, but the pro race reverse manual VB tranny is good for 500-800hp according to John's website. Does anyone know the recommended power level for the pro street RMVB?

My question is is the billet drum worth the extra $$ to upgrade or am I wasting my time if I'm not also springing for hardened input and output shafts, hubs and pump gear sets etc also???

Please help I have to decide soon.

Thanks in advance.
Elmo

The billet drum is the most beneficial in a NO low band apply situation. You probably do not need one, but it is a safety factor. I can tell you I have a few customers that run faster than you will without a billet drum in their trannies. If you don't ,definitely use a scatter shield. Pro Street V.B should be fine. :grinyes:
