Wrong year shifter handle..???
« on: May 23, 2007 - 03:43:57 PM »
-
My 71 Challenger got an A/T shifterknob from a 70, and I got problems getting it in and out of park.
- Also, I have tryed to adjust it to show correct gear in the car, but "D" is still half in to "N", and so on..

Could it be the shifter thats the problem..???

Sounds like it needs to be adjusted at the trans. I cant see the shifter causing the problem. Just an adjustment :2thumbs:

Can't help you with the indicator's position  but  for the "in & out of park" you may have to adjust the knob. Loosen the set screw and turn the knob clockwise 180 degrees then tighten the set screw. This will make the black button push further down on the lock/release mechanism. However, when you do this you'll also have to make sure that it stays in park without pushing the button.

If it won't adjust out,you might have to shorten the shift lever on the tranny.(or it could have the wrong one)

Both problem can be related to the adjustment under the car on the trans lever. Put shifter in park. Get under car and remove trans rod from shifter lever on trans. Make sure trans is in park, wheels blocked, etc. Adjust trans rod until it slides in and out of trans lever easily. Sounds confusing, but will become clear looking at it. Sounds liek the lever is misadjusted and in a bind, maybe you are having to slam it into park to get it to go into park?

Most problems solved...
 :working:
Had all the shifter-mechanisme out, greased it, and adjustet the knob..
Adjusted the lever under car, and it works fine now..

BUT - allso found out why it dont show the rigth gear...
The black plastic thing, with the white line on, who shows the gear, is for a squared shifter stick, and I got the round one, so it simply dont follow the stick rigth...

I'll try to get a new one, but what is it called, and where to get it... :clueless:

Maybe I should get a squared stick instead, to be correct on the 71, dont need the T-Handle, I'm gonna get a Harms pistol handle anyway, - where will I get that stick...???

Sounds to me like you have a 70 slap stick shifter with the indicator plate from a 71 and up shifter.  Getting a 70 style shift indicator plate would be the easiest way to make your shifter assembly complete.  It is not a hard part to change.

I would say it is an Ebay part.  I know of no reproductions.  One can still be out there.  New repops are out everyday.  It was used with all 1970 E bodys that came with the slapstick shifter.  A B-body slapshift indicator will be square will be like the one you have.  They were 71 -up. The 70 B body shifter was a different set up.  The only part you need to look for is 70 E body.  Don't get a B-body slapstick part. I would use the word slapstick for your Ebay search.  Then you can check  shifter.  Etc.  Not everyone will know to call it an indicator.  I would post a wanted ad on this site first.  Shipping shouldn't be bad.  It will fit in the flat rate overseas envelope used here by the US postal service.

Post a pic of what you have so we can be sure of what you need to get.
