4 speed tailshaft question
« on: May 31, 2007 - 09:55:58 AM »
I have read a couple of threads on this here but am still not a 100 percent certain of the answer. I am looking for an 18 spline 4 speed for my cuda, but dual mount tailshaft 4 speeds seem to be slim and very expensive. I have read that there are 2 different bearings for the earlier 18 spline 4 speeds, a 307 and a 308 bearing transmission. My question is will the dual shift mount tailshaft fit on both of these, and if not which one should I look for and how to identify it? Also if it will fit on both, but one needs a bearing change which one needs the bearing change and what bearing goes in its place?

Will the front bearing make a difference when it comes to bellhousings?

Yes & no , there is a 4.8" diameter retainer for the small brg so you can make the smaller brg fit any belhousing except the 5.2 OD
the other way is a problem though if you use a case with the 308 front brg the belhousing has to have a 4.80 hole , there is no way to get down to a 4.35 hole with the 308 brg
