Thanks again for the welcomes and info on the Challengers (Nice jeopardy SNL avatar by the way...that one kills me :).  Have any of you guys/gals purchased or read the book "Original Challenger and Barracuda 1970-1974" -The Restorer's Guide?  The books about $25 or so on ebay and looks like a good read...sometimes though books on vintage cars can be chock full of errors and are pretty much worthless.

Is that the book from Paul Herd?  If so, it's a good book with lots of info but there are some errors in it.  But still a good bedtime reading book.

Check out the second site that bullitt posted.  They have all the brochures for all the years I believe.

Check around on craigslist.org also.  Surprisingly, Challenger stuff pops up there (cars and parts), depending on your location.

Have fun here and don't be afraid to ask questions.  Lotsa nice people here with lotsa info!

Yeah, you don't see then often on the street, usually shows and on the internet.  That's what's so cool when you do see one driving around!

The Red book is pretty good too.  Also some mistakes in there but not bad

Take into consideration that any single muscle era year of Mustang production exceeded the entire 70-74 Plymouth and Dodge combined totals of E bodies, and you can understand why they are not too common.

You also will find huge variations in value and resultant pricing from a few grand to a few hundred grand. A member on here is selling a very restorable 74 challenger driver for $4500, which is decent.  Some Hemi conversions with custom work are in the $100k asking range for completed vehicles.

I've noticed that prices for some of the Challengers and Cudas can quickly reach 100k + easily.  Its amazing what these cars go for...but with the rarity factor tossed in the mix and high demand it makes alot more sense.  The book I was referring to is written by Jim Schild.  The pic on the cover is a sweet sublime (I think) 70 challenger.  The 71s are starting to grow on me as well...the taillights & front grills on the 70s just look awesome.  If I can sell my vert in the near future a Challenger is next on the agenda...my price range is going to be the main factor...some of the project cars I've seen scare the poop out of me :)  As always the more complete the better.  Thanks again everyone for chiming in.

An original high impact color will be more expensive. Are you looking for an original car?  :money:

I'll definitely be looking for a high impact color.  I like my muscle cars to scream 1970...nothing quite does that like a high impact color.  From Ford my favorites have always been grabber green, calypso coral (color of my vert)....of course you cant go wrong w. the majority of the colors from 1970 for the challengers...pink I dont think I would prefer...the plum crazy has grown on me...something about the plum crazy with a white top...looks great.  From the prices I've seen the more original the more chah-ching ya need.  My wife's volvo blew up yesterday...and I'm awaiting the sale of my vert or I'd be much more on the hunt.  There have definitely been some deals out there...mostly on projects.  I wonder what the plum crazy project sold for on ebay the other day...the auction ended early and I believe the car was numbers matching, etc.(70 chally).

Original high impact, #'s match, big block.  There are deals out there.   :grinyes:


I was looking for about 4 months hard for one.  I was going to drive 4 hours for one in pieces, and one turned up 5 miles away.  Needless to say I bought it on the spot.  Didnt want him to change his mind.   :swaying:

You'll find one thats just right for you.  Just be patient (which it sounds like you are).   :2thumbs:

71Bigblock - Sweet 71 by the way -  in one of my favorite Challenger colors to boot :)  Normally I'm not a patient man, but I'm definitely learning to be. I used to always jump on a car asap, and I've found out the hard way (sometimes a new motor, trans later - after I thought a car was ready to go).  There was a 70 Chally that sold local for 1000 bones the other day...I was mentioning I was looking for a 70 challenger to a guy at a local salvage yard and one of his buddies sold if for 1k to get it out of the yard...I dont know what it looked like though - likely a SUPER RESTO PROJECT.  I know where a lot of the stangs are around here but not the mopars.  I'd make a guess as to what you paid for your Challenger but I dont know the market very well and I'd likely sound like an idiot :)  The 71s are growing on me a ton.

It has nice photos, but the text is full of errors. It is useless as a restoration guide.

Sadly, the pages are too glossy to be used as TP.

Welcome Grabber.....I too have Mustangs and a 1970 Challenger RT/SE as seen in my sig.....

I got very lucky a year ago and found mine of all places in a Mustang Trader ad!....the guy sells Muscle cars....and was selling it for his brother....got a great deal....I got very lucky......awesome car but parts are waaaay more expensive then the avg Mustang part........and not as many parts avail.....so you have to find used ones but you learn where to look and this site is great for info and parts locating...

I have a 1970 Mustang 428 Super Cobra Jet and my Challenger!

Barry - thanks for the info...I like nice photo's but the info would be the important thing...I hate books that are supposedly guides on vintage cars that have incorrect info...if you're just starting to learn it starts you off on the wrong foot...kind of like learning 1+1 = 3... 

scf100 - Sweet 70 Challenger - are those magnums on your car?  They look great on the Challenger.  It seems like the parts are a ton more...I was surfing a mopar resto site (cant remember the name), but the parts were about 2 to 3x what I'm used to seeing...the rarity factor causing it I guess.  Kind of like if you want parts for a 428 CJ or Gt500 expect to pay some serious change...or a b302/429.
