my 512 stroker build with ?'s
« on: May 31, 2007 - 06:28:37 PM »
I ordered my rotating assembly today from 440 source, it’s a 512 kit with 17cc dish because I want to run 75cc indy EZ’s with normal port’s

I am undecided what I want to run for a cam I would like to stay with a hydro flat tappet but could be talked into a solid I was thinking of a k-60 , any recommendations?

This engine will be going in my 68 charger and driven on the street and prolly won’t be abused to much.. so I am not sure if I should invest in a block girdle, I know it won’t hurt but will I need it or will it be overkill? Can you run a windage tray with one or do you need a tray when running a girdle?

If I do run a girdle how much of a pain is it to go with external oil pick up?

Holley street dom? Or will I have room for a tall single plane with the indy EZ’s?

I haven’t ordered my heads as of yet I am still trying to decide whether I would benefit from the MW size port heads or if it will be overkill

Engine details:
74 440 block, .030 over
4.25/7.100 kit from 440 source
Indy EZ (not sure what port size to go with)added: had a look at firefighters flow #'s in the porting thread on the DC.com, going with standard port EZ's
Cam?
Intake?

Tranny, I will build a beefy 727 with around 2500-2800 stall

Going in street driven 68 charger that will receive 3.55 gears

if you go with the MW port Ez heads Indy has a good dual plane intake , the engine I drove seemed very responsive even with the Huge ports & the dual plane intake . I f you with the small port I would use a street dom intake
the girdle can be used with internal pick up & windage tray , 440 Source has a great deal on the stroker windage trays , the girdle is not a bad idea but probably overkill
The K 60 should work well but is a hyd cam , I would use a KV1 or & Custom ground Lunati solid grind , I had a almost 600 lift 250* @ ,050 cam custom ground from lunati for a 512 I am building here but it is not running yet

i had a quick look at the engle solid cams,

would there be much difference between a kv-1 with 1.6 ratio rockers and a kv-2 with 1.5 ratio? they both have a 110 lsa but the kv-2 has a bit more duration.

lft will not affect the powerband , Duration will though so yes the powerband will be much different with the longer duration , higher rpm powerband with more duration & overlap
there is an article in the Archives on the effects of cam design & what to look for

You are coming very close to a 505 I have almost ready to start. I went with a larger cam and Edelbrocks, but the cahmber size was reduced to 74cc and I run the dished pistons. If this is a street car, I dont think I would go with max wedge port size. You could, and I dont think it would hurt you much, but the fact is, a 3.55 geared car will be living between 2200 and 4000 in daily driving. The smaller port heads will be more responsive form idle to 4500, and not too much of a restriction. The Indy dual plane is a great intake. I had one a few years ago, and it works great. So if you go MW, that's what I'd go for. If you run std ports, the Stret Dominator would be a #1, with a 1" open spacer on top. FOr cams, in the group you first asked about, I dont think the K60 is big enough. I aim for 245-250 duration at .050 in solid lifter cams. a hydraulic will need more, so I would start at the K-62. And that's just not quite there. It would still run great, but you could go bigger safely.
