ring and bearing choice
« on: June 06, 2007 - 08:54:05 PM »
gonna do a rebuild on my 340, and this is my first motor! what do i need to look for when choosing rings and bearings, also pistons. i am gonna do a pretty stock rebuild (tight budget)   :-\ and i hate to admit it but i am kinda thinking economy too as i am just starting college and still wanna be able to afford to cruise once in a while

It all depends. First are you going to have the block machined? I always use clevite bearings, and have had great luck with them. If you aren't maching the block go with cast heads, if you are going to machine the block I would go with moly rings and have the block honed for them. As far as pistons go a good set of forged pistons are probably a good bet. Manciniracing.com has a bunch of different rebuilds kits, you might find something that fits what you are looking for.

I generally dont like engine kits...But, if it's a totally stock build, and a tight budget, a kit might be the cheapest choice. But I would have your machine shop order it for you after they look things over. I would budget at least $2000 for the basic cheapie job.
