904 Help
« on: March 03, 2007 - 04:22:20 PM »
I have a 904 behind a 360 that was rebuilt 3-4 years ago with a B&M shiftkit(i know yuck). We just got it on the road last year and just got around to trying to solve my transmission problem. It will shift down into low gear but shifts VERY fast into 2nd and 3rd. It shifts out of 1st at about 10mph even if it is in low. I am pretty sure the guy that rebuilt it did something wrong in the valvebody. I have a extra 904 laying around somewere I might swap valvebodies. I also though about buying a Turbo Action valvebody to swap in.

At first, just try to adjust your kick-down linkage..
It's surposed to rise the oil pressure to. That , i'm sure, will help you..

It's amzing what even an 1/8 inch movement of the kickdown linkage can do when you have a shift kit. If you look at where the kickdown linkage connects to my carb, it is being pulled as far forward as it can go by a spring. See if you have any slack in yours.

It shifts out of 1st at about 10mph even if it is in low.

:clueless:  That is strange.   My 904 will shift fast under light throttle, but I can shift it into 1st and it will stay there.

Yes, but mine won't. Is that something the kickdown linkage could do?

Yup,that ain't right 73challenger. Even with the kickdown too loose, it shouldn't go ahead and shift with the shifter in manual low. I bet your problem is the kickdown rod is too loose, but your shifter is not putting your tranny all the way in manual low. Try adjusting it to push your shift lever farther. If you have a slap stick shifter, when you get it to go to manual low ,you will probably lose park. :banghead: If you do post and I will tell you how to fix it. ;D

Before it would not go into low so we adjusted it and fixied that. But now it shifts when you are in manual low. I guess I will have to check the kickdown rod. Thanks alot!

It must be in the shifting linkage.

I still haven't fixed it. I haven't got the car out in awhile. The transmission goes into all 3 gears but shifts VERY fast into 3rd usually. I think it's something to do with my linkage. We have another 904 to swap in but I don't think this will fix our problem. My kickdown linkage has a bolt and nut that holds the peice thats on the carb to the rod. So I don't think its right. Something like that....it's hard to remember. My uncle is the one that was working on it but he's a GM guy. I was just helping so I get a little confused.
