Big Block 509 cam upgrade choices??
« on: June 15, 2007 - 08:38:03 AM »
Has anyone upgraded from their 509 cam to a newer more modern grind? What did you go with and were you happy with the change?

My engine is a MP 500 Stroker crate motor with a six pack. After 25K miles I'm ready for a change. The 509 has been great but I'm thinking I could get more vacuum, more power and a better idle (especially with the AC on) with a cam swap. I prefer to stay with an hydraulic cam. Car is 95% street driven. Those 25K miles were put on in 4 years.

I would use a Engle, possibly the  K 60  , depending where you want the powerband  also Lunati VooDoo grind have simialr profiles  , both are better for both Vacuum & power

I personally think the mopar .528 cam is the best street cam mopar makes...with 1.6 rockers you get a .561 lift... :cooldancing:

The .528 is an awesome cam but not hydraulic
the long duration & overlap gives the .509 its sound , getting more vacuum & better idle needs less overlap / duration so no as you take away the long duration & improve the idle the sound is less choppy

Thanks for the replies so far.  I'd rather stay hydraulic

I ran a 590 Mopar Performance cam in a 500 CID. It was awesome.  Although it is a solid cam.  In my experience with a 500 it doesn't need as much cam as a 440 due to it's larger cubic inches.  A more mild cam like the one Chryco mentioned may be great for the street.  It depends how wild you want to go.

On my 496 Cuda, I have a solid roller (254,258 at 50, and .600/.625 lift). An easy adjustment once a year, and this year the valves didn't even need adjusting.  Idles great and makes serious power. After a lot of research, a solid roller is the way to go for big power. The cam is a Crower. I called them up and gave them my engine specs, and how much power I was after, and they recommended this cam.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"
