Also you both lost the same amount of money in car value, half a years pay, you lost 50% of your salary and so did he, so in the end you both paid the same amount.

So you're saying your should be fined based on how much you make per year? In all fairness then that should apply to all crime - if you get busted at 59 in a 50 you pay $150, if I get busted at 59 in a 50 I should pay $300, and if my deadbeat brother-in-law gets busted at 59 in a 50 he should only have to pay $5 because he hasn't worked this century yet...
