Whats not to like about a drop top ebody?? I would love to own one. As far as value, i dont have a clue?? I have never seen one cheap! I know a 318 is not a power house, but a good one treated right will run forever. If i had a 318 vert i would keep it the way it is. As far as restoring one, i can see it being any different than a hard top.  :2cents:

I would own one, but since I have a few big blocks laying around I would have to drop one in.

It would cost about the same to restore a 318 or a 440 vert. Would not be worth as much money in the end but would still be fun to drive and own. Might be cheaper to buy from the start with the 318.

I bought my 71 318 vert a year ago and have decided to keep the 318 but add a few goodies to give it a little more power and a better sound. I will probably badge the added snorkle hood with 340 emblems.  I have been watching the prices of convertibles for about 2 years   :ebay: and even the ones that need a complete resto to include major body work are going for 10K.  I have seen restored 318s selling for anywhere from 30K to 50K even with the 318 still in it.  Drop in a big block and many advertise them for 50-90K.  I don't actually see too many being sold for the asking price lately.  The cost of restoration depends on what the car needs and how much you can do yourself; I would guess about 25-30K  :money: or more for a #2 car.

I got my 318 vert in 1994.  I drove it until the engine started to smoke.  After talking to several people I decided to go the 360 380hp crate engine path.  Over the years I'ved added alot of items that were on R/T's that if I'd bought the car originally I would have ordered (front/rear sway bar, disc brakes, rallye dash, sure grip rear, etc).  Most 318 cars came with alot of luxury items not seen on most ebody's (power windows, power top, side molding, extra trim, etc.).  I've been very happy with my car and agree a 318 rebuilt right puts out alot of power.  I think the items that matter is are you going to keep the car to enjoy or turn.   :chatting:

Currently I'm in the process of putting a 472 hemi in the car.  This is for my enjoyment and the family.  Even if I'd stayed with the 318, I think built right I'd enjoy the car completely.  Driving a convertible is such a joy and it is mainly the cruising factor.  Since my kids were old enough to ride in the car I couldn't take a drive in it without them being passengers.  No matter how you set up your convertible I think you'll be very happy with it.  If I had the fender tag for my car (I accidentally threw it away) I probably would have kept it original.  In the end it is up to you.

LIKES:

- cool as hell
- lots of repro parts now avail.
- did I say cool as hell already?

DISLIKES:

- flexible and squeeky as heck.  Fix this w/subframe connectors
- parachute effect with top on the highway.  Fix this by somehow sewing in straps to strap the top to the bow
- water leaks, which can lead to rust.
- $$$

I missed the sale on a local 70 Cuda vert here a year or so back. It didn't look that great but appeared to be complete, not a rust bucket, and still cant remember if it was a 318 or 340. Car sold for $22k.

I dont see many (if ANY) complete Ebody verts for under $20k.

I love mine, just don't have time to get it out much.  Its a 70, white, black top, blue int, California black plate car.  Runs fine up to 5000 (Edelbrock DP, small Holley, small cam), then out of ooph.  Handles like a pig.  Plan to put my old 440 t-bars on and frame connectors also.  Have 450hp 440 to go in, just waiting for time.  Turned down 28k last spring.

I bought my 71 318 Challenger vert off of ebay in Oct of 2006.  After fixing all of the rust on my "Cuda, I thought I could easily do the same on a vert and it would be worth so much more money.  I drove a friends to a local cruise one night and with the top down and the stars overhead, I decided that I better find one before the prices went crazy. I made a deal with the seller when I called him to ask about it.  He wanted to sell badly and I told him that my wife and I talked it over and were afraid that there was no car at all.  He waived the deposit, so I did a buy it now to end the auction after agreeing on a lower price. I then headed to Texas to get it. I found out that one of the other bidders, looked up my seller and was there the day before offering him $2000 more than my price, if he would sell it to him. It is now sleeping in the 3rd spot of my 3 car garage so I can dream about it being done. It will be a pace car when finished with a white interior.  It is very rusty right now but the longer I wait, the more new parts are being reproduced.
It's a 318, power top, power windows, power disc brakes and A/C, console car.  Funny thing is that 20 years ago, this thing would have sold for $500 or been scrapped.   ANY e-body vert is worth having.
