Painting underside, what paint to use?
« on: July 05, 2007 - 09:55:11 AM »
I always undercoated, but on this rt its getting paint.  So wondering what people use, base/clear, single stage, or?  Its going to be a driver, 493 eheads with ac and 2.76 gears!  It should top out over 180  :roflsmiley:  Anyways it will be going back to CA when done, so no salt and junk like here.  However what a good looking durable finish.

I had mine done in base/clear and expect to use some undercoating in the wheel wells just to make sure it doesn't chip away and begin rusting. :2thumbs:  The cars I know that are running around have used base/clear and held up really well so far.

I am planning on using Chassis paint available from Eastwood.  It is an satin black epoxy modified one stage paint.  I have never used this before so I if anyone else has, I would like to hear your success stories.

It will get undercoat in the wheel wells and in the front fender area.  Figure those areas would chip fast without it.  I had someone reconmend flex additive in the clear, not sure if thats a good idea or not.  Not sure how many miles it will see, but will be in sunny CA, so can't be as bad there for it as here!

I used the chassis paint on my own challenger as its getting truck bed liner, just too rough for paint!  Although I plan to paint it black, so maybe I can get away without the liner :dunno:

I use PPG dp-40 epoxy primer/sealer and then Dupont chroma one single stage with a little clear mixed in the last coat.I've painted engines like that and they lasted a very long time.back in the day when I built limos that's all I ever used and they held up great also.if you want something stronger you can try some Imron but don't kill you're self useing it!thats the stuff they paint industral machinery with but it's been known to kill the painter. :violin:

When I was considering painting the underneath of the car, everyone I talked to who is in the body and paint industry told me to use a single stage enamel, because it was the most durable, especially for this application.

Thanks guys, looks like were going single stage.  Just got to figure out how far to go with it, towards the front.  Was thinking to the lower firewall seam.

I might be too late on this one but I like to use PPG DCC on the undersides over base clear. It is much easier to spray in all the small  tight areas.
This will keep it from drying and looking grainy when the clear would be appied over base clear.
There is also a option of adding a 50/50 mix of clear in the last coat for a really great shine.

Yeah, that's my plan, and the outside of the front inner wheel wells and the front of the core support.

From the pics above confirms that theory... still figuring out how to go about it.

Thanks for the pics Dave.  I use dupont, well only thing I can get locally, well within a 30 minute drive thats not way over price.  I always prefered ppg, but had good results with dupont, all I used the past 2 years.
