No, you don't cut out any of the cross member/floor brace.

The two forward linkages should be up in the tunnel above the brace. The reverse linkage should drop down underneath the brace. They may require some tweaking to get everything to line up, especially if you have used parts that may have been moved previously.

i think i need to start with the trans in netural how would i know if it is in netural?with the linkage hooked up on 1+2 and 3+4 i could only shift in 3+4 but when i took the linkage off i could shift through all the gears so i though maybe the trans was arleady in gear? is it possible that the exhaust is in the way of my reverse linkage because it seems impossible to get it to hook up???? :pullinghair:

Use a big cresent wrench or pliers on the shift levers on the side of the trans.  Go back and forth so that you know each arm is centered between the gears.   Move the reverse lever forward.   This is neutral.  If in doubt, jack the  rear end up and spin the driveshaft.     Now  center your shifter arms and install the linkage.  Adjust the threaded ends so that the holes line up without moving anything.
