Steering Wheel/Column question

Hi,

my 70 Challenger steering wheel is in a wrong position... about 45 degrees to the right. This is pretty annoying because one of the spokes is blocking the view to the speedo- and RPM-meters. The manual steering gear box was changed some time ago and this position was the only position it will fit. Any ideas what would be the problem... do I need to change the steering gear box, column shaft or something else? Or is there a quick fix how to do it?

adjust the tie rod sleeves , I would center the wheel , then adjust the tierods ends so each tire is equal distance from the frame at the front of the tire  & set the toe in to 1/16"

I have the same problem actually, steering wheel is at the 2:00 position when the front wheels are straight. Is the entire steering column assembly keyed or indexed to only be assembled one way? I didnt have this problem before I rebuilt the steering column. I want to say that during reassembly that all parts would only go on one way. I know that the steering box input shaft has a master spline that will only allow the coupling to go on one way. BOth my tie rod ends have equal amount of thread showing, cant help but think I screwed something up during reassembly.

my problem is now fixed and steering wheel is in right position. All we did was exactly as Chryco Psycho suggested... Thanks CP!

miketyler, maybe during your reassembly the adjustments just changed and now these adjustments need to be done again?

not sure why yours didn`t line up again Mike , did you replace the pitamn arm ?, the column does go together only 1 way , the shoes in the coupler can be inserted 90* off though but you end up with a lot of play in the coupler this way

No, didnt replace the pitman arm. Actually, I couldnt remove it so it never was disassembled. I did put the Grant wheel on and had to drill it to adapt it to the crush can. I am 99% sure it was indexed and drilled correctly. I hope to revisit this and other issues with the car in the next week or so if this rain ever quits.

for closure on this thread, the issue was resolved by setting the wheel at 12:00 and adjusting the tie rod links. It only took 1.5 turns to bring it in to center. The links are very sensitive, I suppose thats whay they have alignment machines to get it within a hair of a gnats a**
