Shimming the engine motor mounts
« on: July 16, 2007 - 12:57:56 AM »
'twas a nice day today, so I decided to get busy putting in the motor mount shims. The driver's side header was just about touching the torsion bar. Loosened the bolts, picked up the engine with the crane, and put in a 1/8" shim. Tightened everything back up, dry fitted the header. Still not enough clearance, so did the whole thing again and put in a 3/16" shim. This time, I got about 3/16" clearance. Hope that's enough. The oil pan was now right up against the passenger side of the K-member, so I ground about 1/8" off of that to give some room there.

The manufacturers of these parts all assured me they were "bolt-on". So far, none of them have bolted on without some sort of modification.

My next job is to install the clutch linkage. Parts of it were lost, so I have to find some replacements. Argh. Never trust anyone else to do a teardown.

What brand/model headers are those... I have heard of plenty of clearance issues but not with torsion bars. Are you making allowances for motor torque over with these clearances?
Mancini may have clutch items you need http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/manualtrans.html

They're TTI headers. I also installed some larger O.D. torsion bars from Firm Feel.

The Lakewood bellhousing also needed a half-moon ground out of the passenger's side to clear the header, but this was a known issue prior to purchase.

I don't really know how much the engine will move around under load, so I'm not sure how much clearance is required.

The odd thing about the TTI headers is they say I have to remove part of the steering linkage to get them in, but that turned out to not be necessary.
