440 engine question w/pics
« on: July 21, 2007 - 11:00:15 PM »
In changing the valve cover gaskets today, I noticed an opening between the intakes on each side of the engine.  It looks as if someting could get in under the cover or intake.  Even washing the engine, it appears water could go there.  Is this a normal opening as I have not had the intake off to explore deeper??

Granted, I need to clean up more since I got her back from paint, but I'm just starting to do a few things under the hood and noticed this.     :clueless: :clueless:

Thanks in advance,  David

Alot of aftermarket manifolds don't cover the heat riser ports.  Pretty normal  :dunno:

RB 413,440 engines had 2 different intake gaskets, what you are seeing is a heat passage. On factory intakes this is what runs under the carb through the intake and helped heat the choke cup. All you need to do is get the intake gasket with the heat passage block off stamped with it. this will cover that area of concern.  hope this helps.

the gasket Dave is refering to is the Fel Pro 1214 for B deck & 1215 for Rb
both of these do not cover this opening though , it is a relief port causing an air gap between the heat crossover port & the head to keep the head cooler , is should be open

That's the factory supplied "Jesus" clip catching spot. Also handy for catching anything small enough to drop in, and important enough that you cant run without it. BTW, the intake block off gasket may not seal that hole. I dont thing it's much different fromt eh std bathtub...it just doesnt have the stap removed for the crossover. I think that area was left open, to help stop the heads from cracking there from too much heat. Or perhaps to drop the crossover temp slightly. In any case, it being open, means nothing...lol.
