speedo help
« on: July 22, 2007 - 12:48:38 PM »
coming back from a show yesterday the speedometer quit working. It would show speed and bounce around a little bit, only about 5mph or so up from the actual speed. then it quit working all together. I have had some electrical issues latley, but suspect it is the cable.  Is there a way to tell if it is the cable before changing it? Any other ideas where to look for the problem?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

It could be either the cable or the guage itself , the speedo is not electric so my guess is the guage , check the cable first to be sure it is not broken , if not then spin the cable in the back of the guage & see if the guage still moves , the guage may need cleaning & lubricating

got it, the cable had come off on the back of the speedo, probably when I was tracing and messing with all the wires on my electrical issues.  Guess driving it for awhile it vibrated completley off.

Thanks Chryco

Speedometer cable should not come off of the speedometer. It has a locking tab on the end of the cable. If the tab is broken off you need a new cable, or it will fall off again.

Yeah Dave,
the speedo cable has a clip, but the back of the speedometer doesnt have anything to clip into, it is just a shaft out of the back of the guage.  What is it? is it anorhter plastic piece that goes on the speedo shaft?

This is a rallye cluster, but all speedometers should have a ridge that the tab locks on to.

No problem, You may just have to push a little harder to get it to click into place. Good luck.

You have to push in on that clip to get it to release, so try pushing in on it as you try to install it.  :dunno:
