What type of gasket sealer for tranny pan?
« on: July 28, 2007 - 08:06:11 PM »
What type of sealant is recommended for transmission gaskets. I have been fighting a leak for 2yrs.

- I initially replaced with cork gasket, still leaked.
- Bought a mopar deep pan and rubber type gasket, used silicon sealer, still leaked.
- I then read that sealant shouldn't be used, so I dropped pan again, and replaced with Fel-pro rubber gasket only, still leaking.

I'm pretty sure it's leaking between the pan / transmission contact area.  I would think a good sealant would fill any voids?

I'm tempted to sandwich 2 gaskets with sealant to try and solve this.

Any suggestions, I'm pulling my hair out!

Key to using RTV is not too much. I used black rtv on my truck and cuda before. THIN coat on the pan, THIN coat on the top of the gasket and tighten lightly. As SOON as you start seeing the gasket push out between the pan/trans, stop turning. Let it setup for awhile.

The best pan gasket you can get, is through your local dealer. they have a nice, thick rubber gasket with steel inserts. decent parts guy should be able to find it.

NO SILICONE!!!!!! It sounds like it is leaking some where else. Check for everything above the pan,it is probably leaking on to the pan.

I never use any rtv on a pan gasket. Just dont over tighten.  :iagree: assuming your pan is in good shape
