The greatest idea since super stock darts
« on: August 06, 2007 - 03:47:58 PM »
I was talking to my brother about his frieinds srt-4 and it just popped into my head... a Super Stock Neon. Somehow stuff a 6.1 Liter Hemi into a Neon and go racing. What do you think about this wild idea?? Would it be worth a shot or not feedback welcomed negative or positive. :feedback: :wavingflag: :working:

That would take a heck of a lot of fabrication, but I'm sure it could be done.

I have seen a Hemi engine dropped into a PT Cruiser, but like was mentioned, you would have a TON of fabrication ahead of you.   :eek4: That is just getting the engine to fit. Then you have to boost up the frame work so it can handle the torque.

Back in the day, there was an Opel GT with a 440 in it running at the track.  I don't see why you couldn't do pretty much the same.

I've seen a PT cruiser Super Gas??? car. It had a tube chassis with the PT Cruiser panels over top.  You could do something similar with the Neon but...

I remember back in the day when Chrysler backed several Pro-Stock efforts, including Sox and Martin, with Hemi engined Plymouth Arrows.  Those powerful engines coupled with those little bitty bodies were quite a handful to drive and even proved fatal to more than one driver.  Wasn't long until they stopped that effort entirely. Not sure that a similar set-up should be persued, but that's just me.  Would it fly down the track?  Absolutely -- if you could drive it....  Just my old 0.02.......     :burnout:    :cooldancing:

I doubt very seriously if the Neon / PT Cruiser suspension and frame would hold up very long with a Hemi. Torque, weight, any aspect about it. You could  however do like the super stockers and build a tube frame and sit the sheet metal over it. Then hang on to your manliness, cuz you goin for one hell of a ride.  :roflsmiley:  :smilielol:

Back in the early 70's there was a guy that put a 455 Pontiac motor in a VW Bug. He sat in the back seat an I never saw him get beat in a race.

Put in the back seat it would fit great there. Or maybe transverse in the engine compartment and leave it front wheel drive. SOunds like a lot of fun to me.

I saw a VW Bug with a crate 360 wedge up front.  I think it was running consistant 12's at the track.  Other than the exhaust, the only thing that made you give it a second glance was the louvered hood.

The neon would be a true sleeper.   :2thumbs:
