Tranplant a 426 or 440 in a 1974 318?
« on: April 23, 2008 - 02:22:26 PM »
Hi,

I'm thinking of kicking out the 318 in my 1974 Challenger and dropping in a 440 or 426.  Could this be done?  What issues would come up?  Obviously I would need a new transmission.  Would there be any issues making it a manual?   I know this is open ended, but just looking for verification that it can be done.  Thanks

It's a relatively easy process. I've done it a couple of times. There is a list of parts that need to be swapped like the radiator, because the inlet and outlets are on opposites side for big block and small block.

I would consider how much you plan to use the car also.  With gas prices climbing toward the $5 a gal. mark I am reconsidering what motor to put into what car based on how much I am going to use it.

no issues , either can be bolted into place , you need to upgrade a lot of parts diff if it is not an 8 3/4 , driveshaft to large joints , either 727 or 833 is a bolt in , GV OD is bolt in as well , Torsion bars , Rad will need to be upgraded , mounts brackets etc all will be different , virtually all parts are available

A very good upgrade, you just need to make sure you have the folding stuff, if a manual is to be installed you will need to change the floor/hump. The good thing is everything is available, ask what you will somebody will have done it before and should be able to steer you on the correct path.   :2thumbs:

Both the Hemo and 440 will require a lot of new parts over the small block, but a major difference between those 2 is that the 440 will use the original K-frame in your car, but you will either need a correct Hemi K-frame, or modify your existing one, if you go that route.  Also, when deciding between the 2, keep in mind the streetability of the car.  A Hemi is great, but can give you headaches with tuning, especially if multi-carbed, and is built for high RPM running.  The 440 is a much better street motor.  You pretty much drop it in and go.  Either way, you will be much happier.  :2thumbs:
