« on: August 17, 2007 - 08:24:58 PM »
i got a 70 challenger-plain jane-going by the back windows being fixed i'd say it's deputy but no fender tag .the factory engine size would have been 198....when i started taking it apart i found the somebody used fiberglass mesh to cover holes...it's going to need quarters, tail panel, trunk floor, deck filler panel, side cowl + more...

I say fix it. But only if you can do the work yourself, because paying someone to fix the metal work is going to be very expensive.

If you have the time and know how to do the work or a lot of money go for it. If not I think you can find one in pretty decent shape for a lot less than what it would cost to fix it right. Good Luck!

Mine was in similar shape, maybe a little better.  I couldn't even guess how many hours I have in fabbing, welding, grinding and I didn't do any of the floors yet, easily a couple hundred and no mud work started.... I say fix it if you can.  I always took alot more pride in cars I redid that were rust buckets.

A deputy is a sherriffs sidekick....
Someone may know more of the details but it was like a police car would be ordered.....
Options - not much on these beasts-
but front and rear sway bars and power drum brakes. Steel rims and caps were standard on this one.

Now the Deputy A93 coupe package doesn't have anything on it that doesn't require for safety.

Like- no second horn, cigarette lighter, inside rear view mirror, radio delete, stripe delete and the rear quarter windows were fixed in place by leaving out the regulator and bolting the track which are now fixed in place. The rear window winder was deleted and the hole plugged with a chrome button but I have heard that they can be black or white too!

Options for interior - white or black- thats it! and they are from the Barracuda line!!! From what I can find is that all base - low end cars had the flat hood - but according to chrysler records - all HP cars had the raised hood!! Go figure!

Now the standard engine was the 198 6 cyl. with the 225, 318 and 383 (2v and 4v) optional.
Standard for all Challengers was the A230 3 speed tranny- but you could upgrade to the auto or 4 speed.

The Deputy was a mid year introduction car in March 1970 and was brought back in 1971. There was a total of 1265 made in 1970 and 2035 made in 1971.

Also instead of the woodgrain on the steering wheel, it was black.

It surprises me that there were actually that many made. I figured they were even more "rare" than that. I don't require actually seeing one personally. I may have walked by one like at Carlisle and didn't realize it ? One of our original members here owns one, I'm sure he has done the background history on these "special" cars.

The rust doesn't look much worse than most other ones, so if you can do fabrication, I would say fix it.  If you are going to have someone else do the work for you, you had better bring a fat check book.

Come down to how much you like the car, and how much money and how much time you are will to dump into it.
