440 truck engines

73 and 74 440 engines from a motorhome.is it anyone who know if those engines have cast or forged cranks.i know passenger cars have cast in those years.

They are the same as car engines as far as when they became cast motors.  You will have to go by the motor year.  I have pulled several 72 forged motors out of 73 Winnabagos. The motor home tranny is a good piece because it has the low first gear in it.  You will just need to change the tailshaft to the car version or use the gear out of the motor home trans.

I thought they stoped making forged cranks in 71?  I guess different applications such as RV / work trucks maybe needed the extra strength?

Maybe it is where they used up the forged cranks.  I have an untouched 72 motor home engine here now with a factory forged crank. It has 73 emission decals on it and was in a 73 Winni.   :dunno:   I believe you are right.  The official cutoff was 71.  Talk about using parts up; I pulled the original 440 out of my Grandfathers 73 New Yorker.  My Grandfather bought the car new.  The correct VIN was on the block.  It is a 73 block with a cast crank and six pack rods.   :screwy:

most 72 440s have the steel crank 73 was mostly cast
