833OD rebuild
« on: August 28, 2007 - 05:19:18 PM »
How hard is it to rebuild a 833 od? I have rebuilt 727s but never a manual. Where is the best place to get the parts? Is there any special tools needed? Any tricks that will help? Mine shifts fine and runs great but down shifting is a problem. The syncros are out.
Thanks
Todd

it is not bad , you need 2 types of snap ring pliers & a dummy shaft  to drop the countershaft
I would recommend a factory service manual
you will need to drop the countershaft to remove the mainshaft to get at the syncros , it is tricky to reassemble the trans but the service manual covers the tricks to do it , get a truck service manual from the late 70s or 80s for the OD rebuild

For the dummy shaft I have a 833 with a twisted tail shaft so I can take that one apart. Where do you get your kits from? What do they cost about? Who has the best service manual (chilton, michiel, etc)?

I know these guys pretty well and they are a great source for parts and help :

I'd get a factory manual if possible.

I did mine last spring. It was the first 833 I have done and it went great. For the dummy shaft ,for the trans countershaft, I used a piece of 3/4 metal conduent(?) for house wiring. I cut it to the correct size and it worked great. I got my trans parts from a seller off e-bay. His prices were good and when I talked to him he was helpfull. I just e-mailed him and ordered direct instead of dealing with the auctions.

I did my first 833 rebuild a couple weeks ago for my dads car. I have to say it was pretty easy and was a little mad that I paid someone to rebuild the one in my car. Just remember where everything you take off goes and you will be fine. Get a good rebuild kit that brings the bearings, gaskets, syncros, and rings....I bought mine from 'Mopartsdealer' on eBay. Like CP said you will need snap ring pliers....I bought a ratcheting plier with removal tips and it made holding them A LOT easier. As for a dummy shaft - I took an old broom handle, cut it down, and it worked great. Also, remember that you will need to get the rear 307/308 bearing pressed off to do the 1/2 syncros. Good luck :2thumbs:

I think there's a big difference between re-sealing and rebuilding. The last re-seal and synchro job I did cost about $120 in parts. The last true rebuild was over $1500 in parts, because the dog teeth were worn out on the gears. Make sure you know what good and not good look like.
