Brake Booster Hissing at me!
« on: September 14, 2007 - 01:49:19 AM »
I think my vacuum brake booster has a vacuum leak.  When you touch the brake pedal you can hear a constant hissing sound that only stops if you depress the brake pedal harder.  I have noticed that the pedal will sometimes sink a tad lower when coming to stop....you have to kind of pump the pedal to regain the braking power and a firmer pedal.

So, here are my questions.

1.  When I replace the booster should I get a new master cylinder instead of using my old master cylinder???

2.  Can the old booster be rebuilt or is it junk?  Should i save it because it is an original factory part?

3.  Any preferences on what type or brand of booster/master cylinder combo I should buy?

I would replace both, its your brakes dude. Not something to play around with. Keep the old stuff, just to say you have the originals if you like. As far as aftermarket goes, unless your changing your whole brake system out. I cant see aftermarket booster or M/C doing you any good. Just get a good quailty one, i like NAPA parts better than Autozone.

Some folks here have used & recommend Booster Dewey... if your OE stuff is in good condition it could be worth the extra trouble/expense to have yours reworked

Before you junk it, take it apart. Make sure it is clean. If there is no bad rust. I changed the rubber in mine. It is real easy to do. The diaphragm cost $14.50 from break rebuild shop 3 years ago

I had a vacuum leak in mine too, disassembled it and repaired the leak.
Here`s a before and after.
I used a glue/bondo made for rubber
