Make sure your shifter is going dead center to drive on the tranny. Maybe even adjust it with the shifter in the "D" position.(unhook the shifter,put it in the "D" position,put the tranny lever in the "D" position and see if they line up)

Could also be the kickdown linkage, maybe? When my linkage was out of adjustment it wouldn't shift into 3rd right away. Not sure if this is the delay. Adjusting mine and it has been fine since.
