When you are at Lowes, pick up a rod that is a a little smaller than the coupler hole.  That is what I've used in the passed. I never had to grind one down a bigger rod to hammer that pin out.  The long rod lets you stand up next to the car with a big hammer.

Ok Dave I tried your tool. Shelby I read your post too late.  I spent an hour grinding down the rod. I tried the tool but it wasn't working.  the pin had been mashed up to much.  So I got pissed off and cut the damn thing out.  I cut just above the box and below the coupling.  I knew that I was going to change the box anyway so I felt that cutting the coulmn out would be alright.  Now I can work on the column while sitting at a bench.

The way I take it out is to use a Phillips screwdriver with the point head ground off.  It makes a good punch with a built in handle and we all have a stripped Phillips around.
