valve lash / rocker gap adjustments
« on: September 03, 2007 - 08:42:41 PM »
Is it ok to start adjusting valve lash on the other side of the motor then come around to #2 as long as you start at tdc???

also since im running aluminum heads now what is the proper total gap between shaft holddown to shaft holddown between the 2 rockers??? .030 total???

You get some type of actual shaft deflection no matter where you start. You can start on any side and anywhere you like. But when you are installing rockers, you should pull down each side even and open lash then go back and forth as to not distort the shaft. This is when you have lifts higher then .550 or so

I always adjust in order of firing so I know each cylinder is a TDC and the lobe is not on the ramp part and the valves are closed. I dont know the distance between rockers off hand but I will look today, unless someone beats me to it. I assume you are using a solid lifter with adjustable rockers. By the congrades on the calender.

I think Moparal is saying when installing the shafts, don't have the rockers loaded with pushrods or at least open up the adjustment so when you torque down the rocker shaft, you don't have any extra pressure pushing in the opposite direction (pushrod pushing the rocker to open the valve).  I think that is what he said :dunno:

:2thumbs:   I build and work better then teach and explain. But you can warp or break a shaft if not careful.

I know that but was curious about starting on the other side of the motor for the valve lash and the gap between the rockers from side to side..???

You can start where you want as long as that cylinder is at TDC. Intake is .010 intake and .020 exhaust for mechanical lifters when motor is warm. I set them a little looser if I have to set them cold. I was looking but couldn't find the side to side clearance. I guess I never worried about it, I just make sure there is a little side play.

I do not have a spec for side clearance , I would expect you need a little more with alum
