Plug Wires - Pre-made or Cut your own? Favorite Brands?
« on: September 06, 2007 - 11:14:23 PM »

Wanting some new plug wires for my 70 Cuda 440-6pack.  Few questions:

1. Do most people buy pre-made for their motor or buy universal kits and cut their own?
2. If you cut and crimp your own, are the $30-40 crimpers worth buying?
3. What brand/type is your favorite?
 :feedback:

Thanks

I always roll my own and the MSD crimpers are a must for the best crimps. I've found off brand crimpers at local swap meets. The interchangeable jaws work great with weatherpack and Deutsch connectors as well. I usually buy the MSD 8.8 by the roll and the connectors in the 100 pack. For single sets buying a cut to length set is a much better deal.

I've had good luck with moroso and msd cut to length wires also. The fitted sets always seem like they are sized too long on a couple of wires. Pliers are nice to have but not absolutely necessary. I think you are going to get about 50 opinions on plug wires here. Just make sure you get a good quality wire and route it correctly away from heat and abrasion sources and you should be fine.

I always use Accel pre-made. I always had problems with the cut your own kind.

I like the Taylor cut-your-own wires. What I really like about them is the snap-type connector on the plug end of the wire. No way is that plug wire gonna get loose from the plug. That's why I switched to Taylors - periodically a plug wire or 2 would loosen up and actually fall off completely from the plug :swear:, and then the car would run like sh*t. And there's nothing quite like trying to re-connect a spark plug wire with a hot engine, is there?
 Anyway, there's my :2cents:

MSD 8.5 mm universal super conductors, comes with the cutter & crimper tool. All you need is a vise....

I use MSD 8.5mm wires (cut to fit), MSD wire shielding, and heat shrink over the shielding-to-boot interfaces.

Once again, nice work Autophile. I usually got the yellow Accels and made my own. Get the crimping tool. Like said before it is a must.
I did go with MSD 8.5mm with the engine I'm putting together now.
There is a guy on Moparts.com, SunroofGTX, that makes wires.http://www.firecore50.com/
If you're looking for a no hassle solution I would at least see what they have to offer. I actually enjoy a good DIY job.
