I finally had time to pull the valve cover off.  The numbers I have for the cylinder head are 26583(could be an 8)20-4 and 10036.  These are the numbers towards the front of the head under the rockers.  That one 3 could be an 8 or a 6.  It is very hard to read.

The block casting number shows up as generic 1967-1975 LA318 in my  book; there should be a date code somewhere else (sorry, its been so long I don't remember where).  The head casting number is not in my book; closest is 2658920, which was used for several 273 and 318 heads from 1966 to 1967.  Part numbers varied depending on the specific engine the head was used on.

Thanks Duodec.  I doubled checked that number and it could be a 9.  Thanks for the reference.

Well, I dont know if there's a statute of limitations on fraud. But, I would seriously look into it. The car was misrepresented. Ignorance doesnt work for the seller. It seems to me he owes you some money back. ON the 318..there were 318 Ralley cars, but not until '74 IIRC. I woiuld try to locate a '72 340. It's the best you can do in terms of investment. I wouldnt spend too much on the 318 unless you start from scratch.
