Alternator clean up

My alternator ('73 Barracuda) is in need of some serious clean up before I put it back on the car. I have never opened one up and need to know if I should just try to clean it up while together, or if I should try to break it down into it's component pieces to do the job. Also, what's the best way to clean up the casing, etc.. And should it stay a natural, unfinished color or painted, maybe flat black?  Thanks in advance

If you don't know anything about electronics, I would not suggest taking it apart if it works. I don't know if you have a budget or not, but you could probably find a nice new one for less than $100 if you want the natural look.

taking them apart is simple, basically just remove the 3 5/16 bolts through the case & pull it apart , I would soak the bolts with penetrant though , as far as removing the armature the pulley needs to be pressed off , the diode pack & the field windings can be unbolted , cleaning the case is best glass beaded , it may work out cheaper to just buy a rebuilt for 40-$50 though
